Babies don’t have a lot of ways to communicate what they want or how they’re feeling, so they do it through their behaviors.
Every parent knows the typical causes of a fussy baby: hunger, fatigue, dirty diapers, or something hurts. Sometimes a baby is just very upset, and there’s nothing you find that works to calm them. At those times, it can cause you to get more anxious and tense. If you find yourself getting that way, put the baby down in a safe place and take a break, but if you stay calm and do these helpful tips that Dr. Harvey Karp, the author of the book The Happiest Baby on the Block wrote, you may find your baby calming down and sleeping.
Dr. Karp discovered a technique called the 5 S’s and it’s the key to calming babies and helping them sleep. It even worked for my babies! Today, thousands of educators across America and the world have been trained to teach the 5 S’s. The 5 S’s include: Swaddling, Side or Stomach holding (never for sleeping), Shushing, Swinging, and Sucking. Following his techniques have helped many babies calm down.
